Speech and language
It’s Good to Talk
Talking to your child is the most important thing you can do to support them and get them ready for nursery, school and life. Learning language should be easy, fun and interactive and it should come naturally. It’s also very complex and sadly many, many children find it hard.
What are Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
Speech and language refer to the skills we use to communicate with others. Speech is all about how we articulate words, while language covers how we combine words to express thoughts and ideas. Supporting children with their speech and language development is crucial, especially in their early years.
One of the best ways to help is by simply engaging with them. Read together, play games that encourage dialogue, and sing songs to make it fun. Using everyday situations to prompt conversation can also work wonders; for instance, ask them to describe what they see during a walk.
Additionally, consider using visual aids or tools like storyboards, as these can enhance understanding. If you have concerns about a child’s speech or language skills, seeking advice from a speech and language therapist can provide targeted support. Remember, every bit of encouragement goes a long way in building their communication confidence!
